An Army officer murdered in cold blood. A ship with deadly cargo is bound for the American coast. Only one man can unravel the plot, but Andrew Douglas always plays by the rules. The former FBI Agent carries out his mission, and follows orders to the letter. Now, the rules have changed, but the stakes are higher, much higher. Threats against his family, a newspaper reporter hot on his heels as he rushes to prevent the deadly assault from the sea, all weigh heavily on his moral compass. Even the U.S. Constitution and the very foundation of the American government are at risk. Andrew has found himself in the middle of a maelstrom, with no escape.

The story primarily follows three main characters: Karen Reilly, a young, beautiful, and extremely ambitious reporter for the NY dispatch; Andy Douglas, former Navy, former, FBI and now private investigator who is about to be drawn into a position of awesome power and responsibility as the Sentinel, the ultimate enforcer for the US under the direction of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court; and Mustafa, a fisherman from Beirut who is about to take on a dangerous mission at the behest of the Hezbollah, to whom he owes much.

When a prominent former general and a notorious arms dealer are killed during a meeting in the Empire State Building, Karen Reilly senses that getting to the bottom of the story will be a crowning achievement of her career, and she will bend whatever rules she needs to for the story. She goes undercover as a paralegal at the law firm that once represented the arms dealer to dig out as much dirt as she can find. Even when the private investigator she hires to track down one of the leads she picks up warns her that she's getting in way over her head, her ambition won't let her rest until she has the story.
Andy Douglas has been in the private investigation business for only a couple of years, but his time in the Navy and with the FBI have given him the street smarts and contacts to do the job well. A man he believes is a printer salesman out to sell him some new printers for the office, turns out to have a much more intriguing offer. Andy takes him up on the offer, and is soon trying to tie up a few loose ends on a case started by his predecessor as the Sentinel, a one-man guardian of the US constitution under the guidance of the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, whose job was created by the Founding Fathers, and has, somehow remained secret all these years. But will his temper cloud his judgment? Only time will tell.

Mustafa, an orphan of the mean streets in Beirut, is a fisherman who owes much to Ari, a highly placed person inside Hezbollah. When Ari asks him to do a mission by captaining a ship on a secret Hezbollah mission, there is no way he can refuse, although he fears that the mission will cost him his life, as well as the lives of his two close friends, whom he enlists to help him. Mustafa's misgivings are well founded, as things rapidly go from bad to worse once the ship he's been asked to captain gets out to sea.

As the story unfolds, all three are swept toward each other inexorably. It's a good, solid story, with a surprise or two thrown in, but I must admit I was a bit disappointed by the ending, which I won't reveal. It makes a neat package, but it feels somewhat abrupt. The action is pretty much over, then the final chapter comes - three whole paragraphs worth - and this reader was left with a feeling of "I've been had."

Interesting premise about a secret layer of protection for our country. The story is written well and is entertaining. The ending is abrupt, but seems appropriate.
Great story! Enough twists and turns to keep you reading. Could have read another 1000 pages! Reminded me a bit of the Da Vinci Code as the story is about something that "could" be.
Storyline is quite compelling and gets you really thinking - could this really happen? A little disappointed in the ending but I guess it was meant to leave you contemplating and judging our judicial system. Would definitely recommend reading - keeps you glued throughout.
Good, engaging hitech thriller. The character of the "Sentinel" who runs his own parallel constitution has been interestingly brought out. The happenings on the land and on the high seas have been seemlessly interwoven. Overall, a good read.
Fun read with an interesting story line, which could be somewhat probable. This would make a good movie. If you tend to prefer non-fiction books this work of fiction will give you food for thought. Where is the line between truth and fiction? Enjoyable, fast read.
The author certainly has a flair for telling a story, but with this book he did not seem too sure just WHICH story he was telling. The improbability of what could be called the crux of the novel tends to be too unbelievable, includes contradictory explanations of situations and a sudden ending. That said, it manages to fill in a few hours enjoyable reading. There is a modicum of grammatical errors, including a generous smattering of unnecessary use of the apostrophe.
I've read thousands of "Thrillers" and I would rate this one Five (5) stars; the dialogue is down to earth, the facts accurate, the plot is realistic and the story moves along rapidly. It certainly asks up to take a leap of faith with regard to The Sentinel, but hey, with what is going on in Washington these days, this is as realistic as anything else going on there.

To Steve Nyman Steve, good job on the book and good job putting it on for FREEE; I would definitely PURCHASE your next book, hope you can get it to market quickly.

An Appreciative Reader,

Jmac
